Packing list for the Arlberg Trail

You’re planning your adventure on the Arlberg Trail and want to start well prepared? Our packing list (created in collaboration with the ASI Guides) covers all typical trail conditions — from sunshine to sudden weather changes.

Tip: Check the weather forecast and adjust layers/rain protection accordingly.

Clothing & footwear

Footwear

  • Sturdy mountain/hiking boots with a grippy tread
  • 4 pairs of hiking socks (merino or technical fabric)

Base layer

  • 4 sets of (functional) underwear
  • 2 technical shirts (1 short-sleeve, 1 long-sleeve)

Trousers

  • 1 pair of long, breathable hiking pants (ideally zip-off)
  • 1 pair of hiking shorts
  • 1 belt (optional)

Warmth & weather protection

  • 1 fleece or lightweight (thin) down jacket as an insulating layer
  • 1 windproof and waterproof jacket (hardshell) as the outer layer
  • 1 pair of rain pants (if your hiking pants aren’t waterproof enough)

Accessories

  • Headwear (sun hat/beanie/headband)
  • Sunglasses (ideally with good UV protection)
  • Thin gloves

Evening / accommodation

  • Comfortable shoes for the evening
  • Swimwear (optional, depending on accommodation/wellness)

Mountain first-aid & personal care

In the mountains, things can happen quickly — a small emergency kit should always be with you.

  • First aid kit
  • Blister plasters + regular plasters
  • Sports ointment
  • Tape (e.g. for knees/back)
  • Personal medication
  • Tissues
  • Sunscreen
  • Tick remover (tick tweezers)

Food for the day’s stage

  • Water bottle or hydration system

  • Granola bars / fruit bars

  • Fruit (fresh) or dried fruit

  • Nuts

  • Bread/snack (e.g. wholegrain bread)

  • Sports/energy bars

  • Vegetables (e.g. carrots)

  • Magnesium (optional, if you’re prone to calf cramps)

Additional equipment

  • Rain cover for your backpack

  • Hiking poles

  • Spikes (for slippery sections / possible old snowfields)

  • Pocket knife

  • Wash bag + toiletries

  • Maps / hiking guidebook

  • Compass (optional, if navigating with a map)

  • Power bank + charging cable (phone/camera)

  • Camera (optional)

  • Zip-lock bags/plastic bags (for rubbish, wet items, documents)

Documents & money

You should always carry the following documents in the mountains:

  • ID card or passport

  • Health insurance card / e-card

  • Alpine Club membership card (if available)

  • Cash (many huts often don’t accept card payments)
