Planning your adventure on the Arlberg Trail and wondering when to go? The hiking season generally runs from July to September, when conditions are ideal for exploring the alpine landscapes between Tyrol and Vorarlberg.
Each month, however, brings its own unique character and appeal.
July: Alpine Meadows in Full Bloom
As the hiking season begins, the mountains around the Arlberg burst into colour. Alpine meadows are covered in wildflowers, waterfalls carry the meltwater of early summer, and nature reveals itself at its most vibrant.
At higher elevations, lingering snowfields may still be present on some sections of the trail. Good footwear and careful route planning are therefore particularly important during this time of year.
Why Hike in July?
- Colourful alpine flora in full bloom
- Pleasant hiking temperatures
- Fewer visitors compared to peak season
- Particularly scenic natural surroundings
August: Long Days and Mountain Lake Moments
August is one of the most popular months for tackling the Arlberg Trail. By this time, trails are typically free of snow, and the long daylight hours provide ideal conditions for extended days in the mountains.
It is also the perfect season to enjoy the many mountain lakes along the route, whether for a relaxing break or a refreshing pause on a warm afternoon.
As with many alpine regions, weather conditions can change quickly in midsummer. Thunderstorms often develop during the afternoon, making an early start highly advisable.
Why Hike in August?
- Long daylight hours
- Warm temperatures
- Ideal conditions around mountain lakes
- Most routes completely free of snow
Local Tip: Set off early in the morning to make the most of stable weather conditions and avoid potential afternoon thunderstorms.
September: Golden Colours and Crystal-Clear Views
For many mountain enthusiasts, September is the most rewarding time to visit the Arlberg. Temperatures remain comfortable, the air becomes noticeably clearer, and distant peaks often appear remarkably sharp on the horizon.
At the same time, the first signs of autumn transform the landscape into a tapestry of gold, amber, and deep red tones, creating a particularly atmospheric backdrop for hiking.
Why Hike in September?
- Often stable weather conditions
- Comfortable daytime temperatures
- Exceptional visibility
- Beautiful autumn colours throughout the region
Why the Arlberg Trail Is a Summer-Only Adventure
Parts of the Arlberg Trail cross high-alpine terrain where snow can persist well into early summer. Only after the snow has melted and the mountain lifts have resumed operation can all stages be completed safely.
For this reason, we recommend hiking the Arlberg Trail between early July and late September.
Before setting out, always check the latest weather forecast and the operating times of the cable cars. From October onwards, the first winter conditions can return to the high mountains, marking the end of the hiking season.
Finding Your Perfect Time
Whether you prefer flower-filled meadows, warm summer days by alpine lakes, or the crisp air and golden colours of autumn, the Arlberg Trail offers unforgettable impressions throughout its hiking season.
The best time to visit ultimately depends on what you would like to experience—but from July to September, every stage reveals a different side of the Arlberg’s alpine beauty.
